The Unbreakable Shield of Devotion: Vrinda and Jalandhar
Our story, rooted in the Puranas, begins with the mighty Asura king, Jalandhar. Born from the fiery third eye of Lord Shiva striking the ocean, he possessed immense power. Yet, his greatest strength was not his own; it was his beloved wife, Vrinda.
Vrinda was a paragon of virtue and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Her love for her husband, Jalandhar, was absolute, and her purity (pativrata dharma) was so potent that it created an impenetrable shield of divine protection around him. As long as Vrinda’s devotion remained pure and unbroken, Jalandhar was invincible. No god, weapon, or celestial being could harm him.
When Power Becomes Arrogance: The Gods’ Desperation
Empowered by this shield, Jalandhar’s ambition grew into arrogance. He conquered the heavens, defeated the gods, and his pride swelled to the point where he even coveted Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva’s consort. The cosmic balance was teetering on the edge of chaos.
The desperate Devas sought refuge with Lord Vishnu. They knew the source of Jalandhar’s power was not in his arms, but in his wife’s heart. To restore Dharma, Vrinda’s unwavering devotion had to be broken—a task that felt both impossible and cruel.
The Divine Deception: A God’s Painful Duty
Bound by his duty to preserve the universe, Lord Vishnu undertook a painful and heart-wrenching task. He took the form of Jalandhar and appeared before Vrinda while her husband was away at war.
Deceived by the perfect illusion, Vrinda greeted him as her beloved husband, her heart swelling with relief and love. In that single moment of unknowing betrayal, her vow of fidelity was compromised. The protective shield around Jalandhar shattered, and at that very instant, he was slain in battle by the gods.
When the truth was revealed, Vrinda’s world collapsed. Her pure love had been used to destroy its very object. Consumed by a grief so deep it turned into righteous fury, she turned her gaze upon Lord Vishnu and uttered a powerful curse:
“You, who are revered as the preserver, have acted with a heart of stone! For this deceit, I curse you to become a stone—lifeless, devoid of emotion. And just as you have separated me from my beloved, you too shall suffer the pain of separation from your own consort!”
This curse, born from a broken heart, is believed to be the reason for Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as the sacred Shaligram stone and the catalyst for the events of the Ramayana, where he endured separation from Sita.
The Sacred Alchemy: From Cursed to Worshipped
After delivering her curse, Vrinda’s mortal body could no longer contain her sorrow. As she prepared to leave her form, Lord Vishnu appeared in his true, divine splendor. He expressed profound remorse, explaining that his actions were a painful necessity to restore cosmic balance.
He then blessed her, promising that her purity and devotion would be immortalized. From the ashes of her mortal form, a sacred plant emerged—Tulsi.
Vishnu declared:
“O Vrinda, you will forever be known as Tulsi. You are eternally dear to me, and no worship offered to me will ever be complete without your presence. You will be worshipped in every home as a symbol of purity and devotion.”

She is then ritually married to an idol of Lord Vishnu or, more traditionally, to the Shaligram stone—the very form he took due to her curse.
