One beautiful afternoon, as Lord Rama rested, Sita sat peacefully nearby, her presence radiating a calm, divine glow. Far above, Jayant, the son of Indra, the King of Gods, watched them. Filled with celestial pride and a mischievous curiosity, he decided to test the limits of Rama’s famed protective power. Was this exiled prince truly as mighty as the legends claimed?
Disguising himself as a crow, Jayant swooped down. At first, he pecked gently at Sita’s feet, a playful, probing attack. Sita, the embodiment of gentleness, simply shooed him away, not wanting to disturb Rama’s rest.
But Jayant was not satisfied. His mischief turned to malice as he pecked harder, drawing blood from Sita’s foot. A soft gasp of pain escaped her lips, and Rama’s eyes snapped open. He saw the wound, the blood, and the crow, whose energy felt unnaturally potent. Instantly, he understood. This was no ordinary bird; this was a deliberate act of disrespect, an attack on Sita’s honor.
The Unstoppable Weapon: A Blade of Grass
Rama’s serene demeanor vanished, replaced by the righteous fury of a divine protector. He didn’t reach for his bow. Instead, he plucked a single blade of darbha grass from the ground. Chanting a sacred mantra, he infused it with the power of the Brahmastra—the ultimate celestial weapon that could never miss its mark and could never be recalled without fulfilling its purpose.
He aimed it not at a crow, but at the arrogant soul within. As the enchanted blade hurtled through the air, Jayant, terrified, shed his disguise and flew for his life.
No Refuge for the Arrogant
Panic-stricken, Jayant fled across the three realms, seeking sanctuary.
- He flew to his father, Indra, who turned him away, knowing that no one should interfere with Rama’s justice.
- He pleaded with Lord Brahma, the Creator, who also refused, respecting the unassailable power of the Brahmastra.
- He begged Lord Shiva, the great Destroyer, for protection, but even he denied him refuge.
Every god and sage he approached gave him the same chilling message: “None can save you from the weapon of Lord Rama when it is dispatched to punish a wrongdoing. Your arrogance has sealed your fate.”
The Power of Surrender and the Grace of Forgiveness
Exhausted, humbled, and with nowhere left to run, Jayant finally understood his folly. He flew back to Chitrakoot and fell at Lord Rama’s feet. Trembling, he confessed his arrogance and begged for forgiveness.
Seeing his genuine remorse, Rama’s heart, which had been hardened by righteous anger, softened with divine compassion. He could not fully retract the Brahmastra, but he could temper its impact. He gave Jayant a choice: “The weapon must strike something. Choose which part of your body it will take.” In his terror, Jayant couldn’t decide, so he simply said, “Let it take my right eye.”
The blade of grass gently struck Jayant’s right eye, leaving him partially blind for eternity—a permanent reminder of his transgression. Lord Rama had delivered justice, but he had also granted mercy.
