(By Adi Shankaracharya – A hymn in praise of Lord Vishnu)
Meaning:
I worship Lord Hari, the protector of the universe, adorned with a moving garland on His neck,
With a forehead like the autumn moon, the destroyer of mighty demons,
Whose body is like the blue sky, whose Maya (illusion) is insurmountable,
And who is forever accompanied by the divine goddess Lakshmi.
Meaning:
I worship the Lord who resides eternally in the ocean of bliss, whose smile is as charming as a blossoming flower,
The indweller of all beings, shining like a hundred suns,
Who holds the mace and discus, adorned with yellow garments,
And whose face beams with a divine, graceful smile.
Meaning:
I worship the Lord who wears Lakshmi as a garland around His neck, essence of all Vedas,
Who moves in the waters (Kshir Sagar), and removes the burden of Earth,
Who is the embodiment of pure consciousness and bliss,
Charming in form, and who takes on various forms for the protection of the world.
Meaning:
I worship the Lord who is free from birth and decay, who is the embodiment of supreme bliss,
Absorbed in eternal meditation, ever fresh and timeless,
The cause of creation, the banner of the gods,
And the sole bridge between the three worlds.
Meaning:
I worship the Lord whose praises are sung in the Vedas, who rests on Garuda,
Who is the cause of liberation, the destroyer of Shiva’s enemies (i.e., demonic forces),
Who is always favorable to His devotees, the root of the world-tree,
And who removes the pains and sufferings of His devotees.
Meaning:
I worship the Lord of all celestial beings, with hair adorned by bees (symbolizing sweetness),
The reflection of the universe, dwelling in the heart’s sky (inner space),
Who has a divine, immortal form free from all limitations,
And who resides in the supreme abode of Vaikuntha.
Meaning:
I worship the strongest among gods, the greatest among the three worlds,
The highest among gurus, ever established in His true nature,
Who is ever fearless in battle, the hero among heroes,
And the shore of the vast ocean of existence (i.e., the one who offers refuge).
Meaning:
I worship the Lord who has Lakshmi on His left side, who rests on the divine serpent,
Who accepts sacrifices performed with devotion, and is beyond attachment and aversion,
Who is praised by great sages and surrounded by gods,
And who transcends even the highest virtues and qualities.
Meaning:
He who, with a focused mind, recites this garland of eight verses daily in praise of Lord Hari (Murari),
Will attain the eternal, sorrowless world of Lord Vishnu
And will be freed from the cycles of birth, old age, and suffering.
